Details:
Morocco was not seen to advance from the group stage but they did not just do that, they actually won the group. Morocco started with a 0-0 draw against the runner-up from the previous World Cup, Croatia. In the next game, they provided one of the biggest upsets in the competition defeating Belgium by 2-0. Morocco needed a win in the last round to advance and they had no trouble defeating Canada with a final score of 2-1.
Spain started the World Cup by defeating Costa Rica by 7-0 which is, and will probably stay, the largest win in the competition. Spain had not much pressure in the next game against Germany sharing the points at the end. They were in a pretty much comfortable position going into the third round where they lost 2-1 to Japan despite being 1-0 up at halftime. Luckily for Luis Enrique, that loss wasn’t costly for the Spaniards who finished the group stage in second place leaving Germany and Costa Rica behind.
Key facts
- Morocco and Spain played in the same group at the 2018 World Cup in Russia and the score was 2-2. Previously, these two played twice 50 years ago with Spain winning both of those games
- This is the second time for Morocco to advance to the knockout stage at the World Cup after they did so in 1986
- Spain won the World Cup back in 2010
No one really believed that Morocco can get to any significant success at the World Cup but what made the difference is that they definitely believed in themselves. Morocco stayed undefeated in the group stage finishing on top of their group over Croatia and Belgium. That speaks enough about how good and ready this team is. They have two top class players in Hakimi and Ziyech and will definitely not back down in the game against Spain. The 2010 champions have a much younger team compared to the previous appearances at the world’s biggest stage. They started strongly scoring 7 goals in the opener but then all their weaknesses came into a sight. Spain is coming off a loss to Japan in the last game of the group stage and even though they are the favorites to win this game, things will not go so smoothly. Morocco is a tough team that allowed only one goal in the group stage and knows how to defend. Spain will not go in full offensive mode knowing that Morocco can punish them if they open up. This will be a tough, slow and long game that will see no more than 2 goals in regulation and maybe will bring us the first upset in the knockout stage.
