The world No. 1 Ashleigh Barty missed the second part of last season but showed up ready at the first Grand Slam of the season. The 25-year-old has won two Grand Slams already but hasn’t won at home.
The 25-year-old Australian is 9-0 in 2022 winning the tournament in Adelaide.
Barty has dominated her opponents in the first five matches in Melbourne and she hasn’t lost a set yet.
In the first round, Barty defeated Lesya Tsurenko by 6-0, 6-1. It was 6-1, 6-1 in the second round for Barty over Lucia Bronzetti. Another Italian was waiting in the third round and it was Camelia Giorgi but she couldn’t do anything more than a 6-2, 6-3 loss. Barty defeated world No. 60 Amanda Anisimova 6-4, 6-3 which was the first loss of the season for the American after eight straight wins.
In the quarterfinals, Barty easily took care of business defeating Jessica Pegula 6-2, 6-0.
Madison Keys have struggled with injures in the past two seasons playing 41 matches in that span which makes her semifinals appearance at the Australian Open a real surprise. The American is currently ranked No. 51 with her best ranking at No. 7.
Keys is 11-1 in 2022 and she won the Adelaide 2 tournament before coming to Melbourne.
She lost only one set so far at the Australian Open. The 26-year-old started with a 7-6, 7-5 win over Sofia Kening following by a 6-1, 6-3 over Tereza Martincova.
Keys went through a real test in the third round winning 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 over Wang Qiang.
In round 16, Keys defeated one of the favorites Paola Badosa 6-3, 6-1. The American had another routine win in the quarterfinals as she defeated world No. 4 Barbora Krejcikova.
