Daniil Medvedev entered the tournament as the top contender to win the title and he still holds that epithet. The Russian won his first major at the US Open last season and is trying to do the same, this time in Melbourne.

Botic Van De Zandschulp was the only player who won a set against Medvedev at last year’s US Open but failed to do so this time, as the Russian won 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.

In Round 16, Medvedev needed 3 and a half hours to go past Maxime Cressy for final 6-2, 7-6, 6-7, 7-5. Medvedev converted 85% of his first serves and 64% on his second allowing only one break-point.

Felix Auger-Aliassime is one of the rising stars on the ATP tour reaching the top 10 in 2021.

Last season the Canadian was 38-24 including 19-10 on hard surface.

He started 2022 successfully winning the ATP Cup with Canada.

At the Australian Open, things have been difficult so far but Auger-Aliassime has survived.

In the opening round, Auger-Aliassime came back from 2-1 down to defeat Emil Ruusuvuori by 6-4, 0-6, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. In the second, he won three of the four tie-breaks for a 3-1 win over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

The third-round match should have been tougher but Auger-Aliassime cruised past Daniel Evans winning 6-4, 6-1, 6-1 in less than 2 hours.

The 21-year-old showed his toughness against Marin Cilic in Round 16 as he won both tie-breaks in the match for final 2-6, 7-6, 6-2, 7-6. Auger-Aliassime served well throughout the match winning 86% of his first serve. He hit 22 aces and had 15 break-points but converted only two.

Medvedev is gunning the world's No. 1 position this season and there is no better way to start than with a Grand Slam victory. Auger-Aliassime has his qualities but will not be able to do anything against Medvedev who is expected to win in straight sets.
