Daniil Medvedev entered the tournament as the top contender to win the title and he still holds that epithet. The Russian won his first major at the US Open last season and is trying to do the same, this time in Melbourne.

Medvedev came back from 2-0 and a match-point down to defeat Felix Auger-Aliassime in the quarterfinals by 6-7, 3-6, 7-6, 7-5, 6-4 in 4 hours and 42 minutes of play. The 25-year-old converted 75% of his first and 51% of his second serve, making three breaks during the match.       

The Russian started his Australian Open journey with an easy win over Henri Laaksonen 6-1, 6-4, 7-6. Medvedev faced Nick Kirgyos in the second round winning in four sets 7-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

Botic Van De Zandschulp was the only player who won a set against Medvedev at last year’s US Open but failed to do so this time, as the Russian won 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.

In Round 16, Medvedev needed 3 and a half hours to go past Maxime Cressy for final 6-2, 7-6, 6-7, 7-5.

Stefanos Tsitsipas was one set away from winning his first Grand Slam last season but failed as Novak Djokovic came back at the French Open final. The world No. 4 is determined to win his first major in 2022 and he has a great chance to do that in Melbourne.

The Greek is coming off an easy 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 win over Jannik Sinner in the quarterfinals and is the only semifinalist who didn’t play five sets in his last match. Tsitsipas spent less than two hours on the court winning 79% of his first serves, converting all four break points without allowing any.

Tsitsipas started with a 6-2, 6-4, 6-3 over Mikael Ymer in the first round. Things got a little difficult in the second round where the 21-year-old Sebastian Baez put on a fight but the Greek took care of business winning 7-6, 6-7, 6-3, 6-4.

In the third round, Tsitsipas again lost a tie-break, winning in four sets against Benoit Paire, 6-3, 7-5, 6-7, 6-4.

The toughest task came in the Round 16, where Taylor Fritz was 2-1 up and Tsitsipas came back for a 4-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win in 3 hours and 23 minutes.
