Details:
Fernando Verdasco is currently ranked at no. 152 on the ATP rankings which don’t speak enough for his quality as he has been ranked no. 7 in his prime. The Spaniard is already 38-years-old and his form is questionable going into every tournament.
Verdasco has started the year quite well with 6 wins and 5 losses, all on the clay surface.
He is coming off a second-round loss in Rio De Janeiro against Federico Coria in three sets, 6-7, 6-4, 4-6. Previously, Verdasco defeated Dusan Lajovic 7-6, 6-3.
This will be Verdasco’s first match on a hard surface this season and last year he finished with a 7-6 record on hard.
John Isner is two years younger than Verdasco and is currently ranked at no. 23. He has established himself as one of the best servers on the tour in the past decade and that is his biggest asset in every match.
The American hasn’t started the year in good form as he is 3-4 including only 1-4 on hard. Isner had a good performance in Dallas defeating Kevin Anderson and Vasek Pospisil in the first two rounds before losing to Reilly Opelka in two tie-breaks including a record one in which Isner lost 24-22.
Key facts
- Isner leads the all-time series against Verdasco 2-1. Their last meeting was in 2014 at Indian Wells where Isner won 2-1.
- In all three previous matches, both Verdasco and Isner have won a set
- Two of their previous three matches have seen a tie-break
- Verdasco is 6-5 in 2022 while Isner is 3-5
Isner is the favorite going into this match as he can hold his serve against anybody. If Isner serves as he usually does, Verdasco will have a really tough task to get even close to breaking his serve. On the other hand, Verdasco is also a good server but his consistency is what is his biggest issue. He definitely has the game to beat Isner but will probably have more unforced errors than his opponent. Still, our prediction for this match is over 22.5 games which is pretty possible even if this match finishes in straight sets. There is no question Isner will do his part, and Verdasco will also use his experience and current form to stay in this match. The Spaniard is probably playing his last season and he will try to play his best.
