Bournemouth and Liverpool had very different experiences in the english topfligt last weekend and there are no prizes for guessing which side goes into their clash at the Vitality
Stadium as favourites this afternoon.
While the Cherries sustained a gut-punching 3-2 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates despite they led 2-0 at the hour mark, Liverpool were rampant in a 7-0 annihilation of rivals Manchester United at Anfield.
Those games were the two most eye-catching Premier League matches of last weekend but it is fair to say they left each set of fans with starkly contrasting emotions.
For Bournemouth, even though they were facing a red-hot Arsenal side, the capitulation in north London was yet more evidence of a leaky rearguard and a lack of psychological resolve and the defeat left them bottom of the Premier League standings.
As for Liverpool, the manner of their win over an in-form United side has reignited their push for the Champions League places and they look back on track with only one defeat in their last seven league contests.
- -Liverpool have won four of their last five matches in the Premier League
- -The Reds have also kept five straight clean sheets in the Premier League
-Bournemouth have managed to win only three league games at home this term
They were remarkably fluent going forwards against the Red Devils with each of Cody Gakpo, Mo Salah and Darwin Nunez scoring twice and Bournemouth fans can sympathize these with
Manchester United, having been blown apart at Anfield in similar fashion earlier in the season.
Back in August, the Reds brought an end to Scott Parker’s tenure as Bournemouth manager with a 9-0 drubbing of the Cherries on Merseyside, having managed 12 shots on target in that game along with 70 per cent possession.
Gary O’Neil took charge shortly after that thrashing and still remains in the Bournemouth hotseat, although things have not been looking good for the club of late.
Cherries have been leaky since the World Cup break. In a run stretching back to their first game after the World Cup break, Bournemouth have lost seven of their last ten games with five of those defeats having been by at least two goals.
They lost 4-1 at home to Manchester City only last month and are not much stronger on home soil than on their travels, so I'm backing Liverpool -1 on the handicap.
