Jake Paul looks to run his professional record to 4-0 when he faces the former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland on August 29.
The 24-year-old Cleveland native holds a perfect 3-0 record as a professional fighter, with wins over the fellow YouTuber Ali Loui Al-Fakhri better known as AnEsonGib or Gib, the former NBA star Nate Robinson, and the former UFC fighter Ben Askren.
The total time Paul spent in the ring in these three fights was 6:23 with Robinson the only one finishing the first round on his feet.
His most recent win in March this year came against Askren, a UFC veteran who is also friends with Woodley. Askren was never known as a striker, leading many to call for Paul to face an actually threatening opponent.
And Woodley is exactly that, an accomplished fighter who has succeeded on big stages before.
Woodley is 39-years-old and a former UFC Welterweight Champion who went on to retain his title four times. He became a professional in 2009 when Paul was only 12-years-old.
Woodley has had an impressive run in MMA that included an undefeated stretch from 2014-18 when he captured the welterweight title with a stunning first-round knockout of Robbie Lawler.
The American lost his title to Kamaru Usman in March 2019. Woodley was dominated for the entire fight and lost by unanimous decision.
After that, he has fallen on tough times with losses in another three straight fights and is no longer with the UFC finishing with a record of 19-7-1.
Woodley has also competed at Strikeforce and was an NCAA Division I collegiate wrestler for the Missouri Tigers, becoming a two–time All-American and Big 12 Conference champion.
The Paul vs Woodley fight came together quickly after both were involved in a run-in backstage before Paul dispatched Askren. Woodley called Paul out for a fight immediately afterward, and Paul accepted.
At the time Woodley wanted to fight Paul in MMA, but later he has agreed to take the fight to the boxing ring which will be his first boxing fight.
With Paul leaving Triller and signing with Showtime, the fight will end up headlining Showtime PPV in August at an agreed upon weight of 190 pounds.
The rivalry has been heated as both promise knockouts on Aug. 29.
Woodley is not in the best of form as he has lost his last four fights, while Paul has won his first three professional boxing bouts. However, the quality of Paul’s opponents have been questioned. Despite that, the younger boxer has been tipped as the favorite in the betting markets.
Paul is aware that he is facing an experienced fighter but his confidence is on the highest level.
“Tyron is a good striker. He’s known for knocking people out. But I think when I beat Tyron, people have to put respect on my name,” says Paul.
“But that’s not what I’m here for, to be honest. I already know how good I am. I know that this is going to be another easy fight. That’s why Showtime is in business with me. You’re looking at the future of boxing.”
But Woodley also has what to say to his opponent.
“Easiest fight of my career and biggest purse of my career all in one night,” says Woodley.
“Basically, they brought me in to take out the trash. Can’t wait to shut this b***h up. This is getting done for the culture, the whole MMA/boxing community, to rid this guy of combat sports.”
