Saul Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin 3 Predictions & Tips
Saul Alvarez is backed to win the trilogy fight.
Alvarez is in his prime and has fought regularly in recent years, winning several world titles.
Gennady Golovkin, meanwhile, will be 41 when this fight occurs and has much less active.
He is tipped to take Canelo the distance again, but GGG’s best chance of beating his rival is likely to have passed him by.
Last matches:
- The first fight went to a split decision draw in 2017
- Saul Alvarez beat Gennady Golovkin by majority decision in the rematch in 2018
Saul Alvarez Form
Saul Alvarez goes into this trilogy fight on the back of only the second defeat of his professional career.
Canelo suffered a decision defeat to Dmitry Bivol when he challenged for the WBA (Super) light-heavyweight title back in May.
The Mexican star is back at super-middleweight for this fight, however, and he is 5-0 at this weight.
Alvarez moved up to super-middleweight after registering a majority decision win over Gennady Golovkin back in September 2018.
In his debut fight he stopped Rocky Fielding inside three rounds to claim the WBA (Regular) title.
He then dropped backed down to middleweight to unify several world titles with a decision win over Daniel Jacobs, before moving up to light-heavyweight to knock out Sergey Kovalev in the 11th round.
That victory over Kovalev earned him the WBO light-heavyweight crown, but his next four outings would be back at super-middleweight.
Canelo won the WBA (Super), WBC and Ring Magazine titles with a decision win over Callum Smith, before retaining them by stopping Avni Yildirim inside three rounds.
Alvarez added the WBO belt to his collection next, stopping Billy Joe Saunders in eight rounds.
He then unified the division by taking the IBF belt thanks to an 11th round stoppage of Caleb Plant, before returned to light-heavyweight for the loss to Bivol.
That surprise defeat earlier this year left Canelo with a 57-2-2 professional record.
Gennady Golovkin Form
Gennady Golovkin has gone a perfect 4-0 since losing his second meeting with Saul Alvarez in 2018.
GGG established himself as one of the best fighters on the planet as he tore through the middleweight ranks between 2006 and 2017.
He brutalised a string of opponents as he stacked up world title wins and defences.
By 2016 it appeared to be almost a matter of time before he shared the ring with Canelo, with stoppage wins over Dominic Wade and Kell Brook taking his record to 36-0.
Golovkin then earned a decision win over Daniel Jacobs in March 2017 before it was finally confirmed that he would face Alvarez in September of that year.
The pair went the full 12 rounds and despite many giving Golovkin the nod, the judges decided otherwise as they rendered a split decision draw.
An immediate rematch was ordered but later cancelled when Alvarez failed a drugs test.
Golovkin obliterated stand-in Vanes Martirosyan instead, keeping himself sharp for the rematch.
Canelo-GGG 2 finally took place in September 2018 and once again many had Golovkin winning the fight, only for the judges to disagree.
He suffered the first defeat of his professional career as Alvarez was awarded a majority decision.
Golovkin has fought just four times since then, although he has gone a perfect 4-0 to become middleweight world champion again.
He stopped Steve Rolls inside four rounds before claiming the IBF and IBO titles with a decision win over Sergiy Derevyanchenko.
GGG retained those belts with a seventh round stoppage of Kamil Szeremeta in December 2020, but would not fight again until April of this year.
Golovkin made a winning return to action, stopping Ryota Murata in the ninth round to claim the WBA (Super) middleweight title and take his record to 42-1-1.
