Summary:

This is a situation where I have to take the number over the team. The Reds and Brewers are close to even overall. Although the Reds appear to have the starting pitching advantage with Sonny Gray going, Gray will also be starting in his first game since September 10, after going on the 10-day IL with a mid-back strain. Before going on the IL, Gray was rocked in his last two outings, allowing five runs in only 3 1/3 innings to the cubs on September 10, and six runs to the Cardinals in just 2/3 innings on September 1. Anderson has not been dominant this season, but he has been reasonably consistent, not allowing more than four runs in any start this season. The Brewers have also come away with the victory in four of Anderson's last five starts, including a 4-2 win over the Reds on August 24. I will take the Brewers

Details:

Cincinnati right-hander Sonny Gray loked like a potential Cy Young candidate through his first seven starts of the season, but everything has rapidly come crashing down the last two times he’s taken the mound.

Gray comes into his start on Tuesday with an ERA of 3.94, a number that has more than doubled since the start of September after allowing 11 runs and six walks in just 4.0 innings combined over his last two starts. Gray hasn’t pitched in 10 days, and he faced a surging Milwaukee team that has now caught the Reds in the wild card race and is still playing for second place in the division.

The Brewers start veteran lefty Brett Anderson, who has been one of their most dependable rotation options down the stretch. Anderson has gone 6.0 innings in three of his past five starts, winning all of those–including a strong effort against the Reds on August 24 in which he gave up just two runs. He has pitched in big games before, and with a playoff berth on the line expect him to come out stronger than Gray and lead the Brewers to a win.

My prediction: Milwaukee win
