The opening game of the series brought a vintage performance for Los Angeles Kings goalie Jonathan Quick who turned back the clock for a 36-save nigh in the 4-3 upset win over the Edmonton Oilers. Edmonton’s goalie Mike Smith made a costly mistake late in the game trying to clear a puck from behind the net and it led to the winning goal by Phillip Danault. Smith otherwise played a decent game, stopping 31 of 35 shots he saw and he will be relied on in Game 2. The Oilers were arguably the better team in Game 1 but just got let down by their goaltending in a sensitive moment. Edmonton will bounce back and continue their successful season led by Connor McDavid. The Oilers won 3 of 4 in the regular season over the Kings, so it’s not a matchup they’ve had problems with.
