The Fremantle Football Club was founded in 1994, twenty-six years ago. Their nickname is the Dockers. Their signature colors are Purple and White, while the women’s team includes Crimson as well.

As of now, Freemantle hasn’t won any premiership since its foundation date, along with gold Coast and Greater Western Sydney. However, the team had participation in the 2013 grand final, which was against Hawthorne and ended up with the opponent’s victory.

In the modern-day, Fremantle has its base at the Cockburn ARC (training and administration). They play their home games at the Perth Stadium.

Unfortunately, their most successful season was in 2020, which was cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Quick facts about the team

  • The team hasn’t won a single premiership since they started their activities. However, they’ve been present in seven final series, the first time being in 2003 and the last time in 2015.
  • They have won one minor premiership, in 2015.
  • Despite not having won a premiership in more than twenty years, they have only obtained one wooden spoon, in 2001.
  • Their highest score was during a match against Collingwood: 28.12 (180).On the other hand, their lowest score was 1.7 (13) while they were paired against Adelaide.

Brief history of the team

In 1993, it was announced by the AFL that a new team – based in Fremantle – would be admitted to the league in 1995. However, there were negotiations since the late eighties for a new team based on the same location, but this wasn’t possible until years later.

The club didn’t have a good start. In most seasons, they were amongst the bottom teams, but things started to change slowly starting from the 2003, which then became the first year where the team made it to the finals. Although the match against Essendon was promising at first, they were defeated.

The following years were a disappointment for the Dockers. The 2006 season was among the best times for the team during the 00s decade as they ended the season with fifteen wins. This same season marked the first time when Fremantle won its first final series game, which was Against Melbourne. However, this excitement didn’t last for too long as the following match, which was a preliminary final against the Swans, resulted in a defeat.

The club currently holds the record for the lowest score in the 00s decade (1.7 [13]) during a match against the Crows in 2009. This is their lowest score to this date.

The following year, in 2010, the team made it to the finals again and was paired up against Hawthorn. Although there weren’t too much hopes for them and were actually considered the underdogs of the game, they ended up winning by a notable margin – thirty points. However, once more, this excitement didn’t last for too long as the team was defeted by the Geelong cats during the semifinals.

In the present

Over the 2010s decade, the team demonstrated a lot of potential, but then was overshadowed by more experienced teams. However, although it isn’t a secret for anyone that the team struggled numerous times throughout the years, they maintained themselves in the top positions in multiple seasons.

Although the -21 season hasn’t been the best for them, the team has been able to maintain themselves in the fifteen position of the ladder. Although they’re still at the bottom, they are away from the bottom teams by more than ten percentage points.

Their next game is against Hawthorn, and will take place at the Optus Stadium on Sunday 11 April.
