The Port Adelaide Football Club has been active since 1870, as its logo clearly suggests. Although Port Adelaide has been active for more than one-hundred and fifty years, the team has only won one premiership in the Australian Football League (AFL), in 2004.
However, if we talk about the South Australian National Football League (SANFL), we can tell you another story. The reserves of the team play in the previously mentioned league, and they have won 36 premierships.
Port Adelaide was admitted into the AFL only in 1997. They are the only non-Victorian club that is part of the AFL.
Port Adelaide began its activities on May 12, 1870. As it was mentioned above, the team first worked as a football and cricket club, but since then, both teams have parted and have activities of their own.
Their first premiership happened in 1884. Port Adelaide was the team to end Norwood’s six-year streak, and the following years continued with more victories for the power, including their first Championship of Australia in 1890 against South Melbourne, team who had recently joined the VFA.
However, starting from this year, dark times started for Port Adelaide followed by the severe depression that affected Australia during that decade. However, in 1896, the team went through a revitalization, which worked exceptionally well as they earned their third victory in the SAFA in 1897.
Throughout the years, Port Adelaide went through mostly good seasons overall, despite the major problems the country had been going on as a result of distinct problems such as two world wars and economic problems.
The VFL started to expand its boundaries in the nineties. During that process, Port Adelaide tried to enter the league, but their request was denied and was given to the Adelaide Crows instead. Still, Port Adelaide kept reining the SAFL throughout the whole decade.
Although their official admission to the AFL was supposed to be in 1996, the team didn’t make it to the league until a year later. During the first seasons, the results weren’t as good as expected, although things started to change slowly after 1999 when Mark Williams started being part of the team as a coach.
The team reached the highest peak of their career in the AFL in 2004, year when they made it to the finals and defeated the Brisbane Lions. As of now, this has been the only win for Port Adelaide.
As of now, Port Adelaide is at the fourth place for the best teams in the -21 AFL season. They have only lost one game, against the West Coast at the Optus Stadium.
Their next game will happen on Friday April 9, at the Adelaide oval. They’ll face Richmond, team which currently has the sixth place in the ranking for the best teams. Port Adelaide has had a good performance overall throughout the season, maintaining a good score. How will they handle it during the future rounds?
