The Richmond Football Club, commonly known as the "Tigers" has been active since 1885. It is one of the few teams present in the AFL that hasn't suffered a major rebrand since its foundation date. As of now, the team has been playing for more than 136 years.
Although the team hasn't suffered any major change over the year, they've changed their uniform at least seven times throughout their history.
Throughout the years, the team has had an excellent performance and has maintained themselves as one of the most remarkable teams in the AFL with 13 premierships won until now in the VFL/AFL.
This football club started its activities in 1885, specifically on February 20. Soon after its foundation, the team was admitted in the Victorian Football Association, but struggled to maintain itself relevant in the league during the first years.
Although the team had started to see some light in 1888, their destiny had a different turn and Richmond started to lose players for the same reason.
Things started to change for Richmond when the XX century began, after George Johnson joined the team. The following seasons where hugely beneficial, although the team didn’t make it to the finals until 1919, year when they lost against Collingwood. Since then, both teams have established a well-known rivalry.
The following year, both teams faced each other in the field again, and Richmond finally earned their first premiership. Throughout this decade, the team made it to the finals multiple times, although all of them were equally frustrating. Richmond and Collingwood encountered themselves in the finals during three consecutive years, with the former losing all the games against the latter.
Richmond did not win another premier ship until the next decade, in 1932, when they won against Carlton. Following their defeat against South Melbourne in 1933, the team earned their third premiership during the 1934 VFL Grand Final.
Similar to what happened in previous years, the team had to wait almost a decade, specifically nine years, to win another premiership. Since then, the team maintained an overall stable streak, having won another five premierships in 1967, 1969, 1973, 1974 and 1980.
However, the team went through another drought for almost four decades, as the team didn’t earn another AFL victory until 2017.
The team won for two consecutive years, in 2019 and 2020. During the -21 season, they have had an average performance as they have won two of three games. Their only lose 2021 has been against Sydney. The recent months have been a bit controversial for the team, as they’ve been in the eye of the storm more than once and it isn’t even the half of the year.
In early March, Amazon premiered a documentary which covered part of the Tigers’ history.
