The 47th edition of the Copa América is just around the corner! It was supposed to happen in 2020, but due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it was postponed. Still, we’re just about two months away until we can see the greatest teams of South America face each other in the stadium to take that cup home.
Starting date: June 11
Finishing date: July 10
We have about one month to enjoy of this tournament. The Copa América is usually celebrated during even years. The only exception has been in 2021, which is an odd year, due to the reasons explained above.
It is hugely important to note that Colombia and Argentina will be the hosts for this year’s competition, another unusual fact.
Once this year’s Copa América is over, the UEFA will be looking forward to unify the calendars and make them coincide with the breaks for most football players.
There will be no guests. Mexico and the USA were invited in previous years, but it was confirmed by CONMEBOL that Australia and Qatar would be the guests. Still, this wasn’t made possible due to the FIFA’s eliminatory being rescheduled to June 2021, the same month where the Copa America is scheduled to start.
The opening match will be between Argentina and Chile, and will take place in Buenos Aires. On the other hand, the final match will take place in the Estadio Metropolitano Roberto Meléndez.
The competition will be using a new format during this edition. There will be two groups of six, each of which will be divided according to the geographical proximity:
Group A: This group will have the neighbors Argentina and Uruguay. The other teams include Bolivia, Chile and Paraguay.
Group B: This group will have neighbor countries Colombia, Venezuela and Brasil. The other two teams include Ecuador and Peru.
Each group will have only four teams to classify for the finals. This new format comprehends 28 matches, which means that each team will play minimum four games.
The game will take place in nine cities throughout the 29 days. There will be five Argentinean cities, and four Colombian cities.
Multiple sportsbooks have Argentina and Colombia as favorites due to the home advantage. However, Argentina is usually at first place with odds of 2.90. The next team in the rankings is Brazil, with 3. 00. Most betting sites are expecting Brazil to surpass Argentina and become the top team again. Although Colombia is at the third place and is at a really good spot, that doesn’t mean anything. Brazil and Argentina have demonstrated to be the leading forces of South America, so we have to wait to see how the rest of the teams handle the battle against such strong teams.
What are some good tips for the 2021 Copa América? Well, you can choose one of the two ways possible (literally) if you want to play it safe: Argentina and Brazil. It is very likely that one of these two teams will make it to the finals (if not both of them) and take the cup home.
But if you want to earn a bigger wager and think that there are opportunities for other teams, there is plenty of room to choose from.
Let’s not forget that Uruguay is the team that has won the most Copa America titles, followed by Argentina and Brazil. On the other hand, Colombia has only won one time, in 2001. Still, this year they have the home advantage to their favor, making multiple finals possible this year!
