Ed Woodward as the CEO and vice president of the Manchester United will quit both of his positions at the football club after eight years. The 48-year-old man took the decision after the British press revealed that the Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City withdrew from the European Super League, a new competition.

According to the BBC, the Glazer family and Woodward had an amicable agreement and decided to make the information public to avoid leaks of information.

It is worth noting that the European Super League announcement hasn’t received very well amongst the British public. Some of the British media have speculated that the reason for this retirement was due to this negative reaction. Now, we are left with another doubt: will the Manchester United still be part of this project?

On the other hand, Manchester City has already retired from this competition whose main purpose was to shadow the Champions League. There are some rumors say that the Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid could also withdraw from the project.

Woodward was one of the Glazer family’s main assessors. This surname is the owner of 57 percent of the actions of Manchester United. He started in the club as part of the commercial area, but in 2005 he became the vice president and executive director of the institution.

In an official statement, he said that he was proud of this journey and to have served the Manchester United for over 16 years. Woodward had been in this position for about eight years. He replaced David Gill in 2013. Since then, his image and persona have been surrounding by polemics and rumors.

Woodward continued saying that the group as a well-established position in the current scene and that their future was bright. Furthermore, he mentioned that “it would be hard to say goodbye at the end of the year.”

The Super League is in crisis even before its first edition

The super league had as its main goal to generate millions in revenue for 12 of the main football clubs of Europe:

  • Real Madrid
  • Barcelona
  • Atlético de Madrid
  • Tottenham
  • Liverpool
  • Chelsea
  • Arsenal
  • Manchester City
  • Manchester United
  • Inter de Milan
  • Juventus
  • Milan

Upon the announcement of the creation of this new league, many people, including ex-soccer players, fans, authorities and even some players have expressed their discontent towards this decision. The main face behind this project is Florentino Perez.

The announcement of the European Super League has been received with mixed opinions from all round the world. One of the most remarkable voices in the football Scene, Gianni Infantino, the current president of the FIFA, said that the institution disapproved the creation of the competition.

It has been reported that ten of the twelve announced teams have abandoned the competitions. However, this project still has to face some problems in the court, according to experts.

However, the European Super League isn’t a new concept. This format is similar to the Basketball Euroleague, which has been around since the start of the new millennium. Similar to what we’ve sid before, the main purpose of this league is to generate more revenue and benefits to th teams involved on the competition.

Still, despite all the polemics that are surrounding this project, it could still be re-launched in the future. For now, we still have to wait to see what other repercussions will suffer the teams and directives that were involved in the creation of the competition. Some people speculate that the creation of the Super league could imply the removal of smaller teams from the football business.
