This competition is officially known as the Campeonato Nacional de Liga de Primera División. It is the most important football competition of Spain, and has been around since 1929, more than ninety years ago.
The current champion of this league is the Real Madrid C. F., which have taken 34 titles since the league’s foundation. Their long time rivals, the F. C. Barcelona. Throughout the league’s history, it has suffered only two interruptions – the first time being between 1936 and 1939 due to the events of the Spanish Civil War.
This year’s La Liga will take place between February and May. There will be two groups of 14 teams, and then the eliminatory phase since the quarter finals. It will finish just one month before the Copa América starts, which was also postponed due to the ongoing COVID-29 pandemic.
However, unlike the previous competition, this time the format will be taken straight from the 2016 system:
The first game already took place over two months ago, on February 14. However, the finishing date for the groups phase is on May 9. These are the other important dates you should keep in mind:
Quarter finals: This phase will take place during the May 16 weekend.
Semifinals: This phase will start on May 23.
Grand Final: It will take place on May 30, leaving the ground free for the Copa América to start.
La Liga, similar to other sports betting categories, has been stationary over the years as it involves the same teams over and over. You can use this predictability to your advantage. You can take the following information into account:
As an interesting fact, the only time when a team outside the previously mentioned football clubs won the competition was in 2004, when Valencia took the victory.
Although Barcelona won the most premierships in the latest decades, the Real Madrid is still the champion of the league as they’ve accumulated 34 cups since La Liga was founded. Followed by them, there is the Barcelona and the next the Atlético Madrid.
Therefore, it is very likely that this year we’ll see history repeat itself again. It’s very unlikely for a different team outside the big three will take part in the finals, but you can see all the crucial information and the future games that will take place in La Liga’s official website (the main site is in Spanish, but you can change the language in the bar you can see above).
You can play it safe and go for the big three according to the results, which seem to not differ so much. Still, we can’t deny all the excitement we feel during the tournament. Let’s see how things turn out this year!
