German forward Timo Werner decided to leave RB Leipzig after his 4-year contract ended with them. The 24-year old said that he made this “hard decision” to leave Germany and join Chelsea to get a shot at competing in different leagues and win top titles.

Several different teams expressed their interest in the German. On top of the list was Liverpool. They showed interest in Werner pretty early. The only problem they had was when they were presented with the 54 million Euro release clause. It was way too much for The Reds. Chelsea, on the other hand, was more than willing to get the star.

After a little bit more convincing, Frank Lampard was able to lock-in the German to dawn the Chelsea colors. Werner said he sold on Lampards Stamford Bridge vision with Chelsea. Werner also acknowledged Chelsea’s effort to rebuild a championship team to bring top honors to their England team.

Werner said, “I’ve come here to win titles, Chelsea is a big club and a club that always wants to win.

“Now we have a very strong team and a young team that can develop and can go through a period of a long time where we can stay together.

“I wanted to come to the Premier League because it’s the world’s best league, and for me, it’s the best feeling to play in front of Premier League fans. When we played at Tottenham with Leipzig, it was crazy, really crazy to play there in front of the people. So I wanted to have the feeling to play in the Premier League to play for such a big club like Chelsea.

“Of course there were some other clubs also, like Liverpool – who have a great team, and also maybe I can fit good to some other teams. But, at the end, I decided to join Chelsea because, for me, it was the best decision I can take.

“I think it was a hard decision in the end, but I am very, very excited and proud that I decided like this because now when I have been here for at least one and a half months, it feels right. It feels good. The team is brilliant.

Overall, it was Lampard who sealed the deal with Werner. The manager remained in constant contact with Werner throughout the process and went the extra mile due to not being able to meet in person because of the coronavirus. He sent over videos of his overall plan for Chelsea’s plays to the coveted German star.

The German made his debut with Chelsea late last month, where he made Chelsea’s lone goal in the 4th minute of a friendly against Brighton & Hove Albion FC. His second game was their opener in the Premier League against Brighton once again, and the team won away 3-1. Their next match will be quite interesting. The Blues are set to face Liverpool at Stamford Bridge this coming weekend.
